Identify

The Butterfield National Historic Trail Association is working with the National Park Service to identify the actual route taken from 1857 – 1859. In addition, we are working to identify closely associatied sites which would improve the visitor experience.

Promote

The Butterfield National Historic Trail Association promotes the Butterfield  Overland Mail route to visitors to further the cause and support the establishment of educational experiences for better understanding of the importance of the Butterfield Trail in the development of the west.

Protect

The Butterfield National Historic Trail Association encourages the protection of the landscape that was present in 1858 so that the future generations can enjoy it.

Preserve

As the Butterfield National Historic Trail Association and the National Park Service identify important sites and historic trail segments, we seek to protect the best of our natural historic areas through ongoing efforts.

Welcome to Butterfield National Historic Trail Association

The Butterfield National Historic Trail Association was formed to promote the longest overland mail and passenger route in the history of the world. Seeking a mail service to carry mail & passengers from the East to West, the Attorney General awarded John Butterfield the contract for his Overland Mail Company on September 16, 1857. Butterfield was the most qualified to run the longest stage line through an extremely inhospitable environment.
